This year’s IB DP Visual Art Exhibition, “The Distance Between Us,” by Rainky Liu, is an evocative exploration of separation and connection in its many forms—physical, emotional, temporal, and existential. Inspired by her experiences as a frequent transfer student, Rainky uses her artwork to navigate the ever-evolving nature of distance, questioning, “How can those experiences of emotions become valuable to me? Is there anyone else experiencing the same feelings as I do?”  

The IB DP Visual Art Exhibition is the pinnacle of our students’ artistic journeys—a space where they bring their creative visions to life, showcasing years of dedication, experimentation, and growth. For those pursuing art in the future, DP Visual Arts is an instrumental steppingstone, equipping them with the skills, techniques, and conceptual depth essential for success in creative fields. Rainky has gained entry into several top universities, including SCAD ranked #1 in the USA for Design.

Rainky masterfully combines charcoal, oil paint, dried materials, and sculptural elements to create an immersive experience. Her works guide viewers through a journey of introspection, where negative space and intentional arrangement emphasize both isolation and unity. One particularly striking piece, “Full Moon,” challenges traditional notions of home, using stark contrasts and ghostly faces to depict the struggle of belonging in a world of silent expectations. Well done, Rainky!
