Testing Reflexes in MYP Science
In the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, students ages 12-16 make practical connections between their studies and the real world. In addition to rigorous content knowledge, they build skills like critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, which are not only prized by universities and employers but are also essential to each student achieving personal fulfillment.
During the recent MYP Science unit ‘Got Balance?’, MYP 4-5 students had fun testing their senses and reflexes! They had a station-rotation activity where they had to use their senses to identify different stimuli. The students also recorded the automatic responses given by their friends. Then they applied what they experienced to what they learned about the nervous system and made models of reflex arc. Finally, they had video presentations explaining the science behind reflex actions shown in their models in connection to their real life experiences.
