DP Collaborative Sciences Project: Beach Safety

by Jakub Grzeszczuk, MYP Coordinator, Science HOD

DP students travelled to Shilaoren Beach, for their Collaborative Sciences Project (CSP), an interdisciplinary endeavor that embodies our school’s mission of fostering inquiry-based learning and developing courageous global citizens. The CSP is a required component of the IB DP curriculum, encouraging students to apply scientific principles in practice. The CSP serves as a platform for students to explore and solve real-world problems through collaboration, fieldwork, and research. Each CSP revolves around a theme related to a specific issue, and this round’s focus was Beach Safety.

Students were tasked with exploring the theme through various lenses – environmental science, biology, physics, and chemistry. The project not only encouraged students to think critically about hazards but also to propose potential solutions.
Students collaborated in mixed-level groups, honing their communication, teamwork, and research skills. Teams collected data on topics ranging from microplastic pollution and slip hazards from algae growth to the effects of overheating and dehydration on beachgoers. Through scientific inquiry, they analyzed how these factors impact both the environment and public safety.
This project is not just about science – it’s about real-world application. Students conducted research, gathered and interpreted data, and communicated their findings in professional, conference-style presentations. Each team produced a scientific poster, highlighting their research, analysis, and proposed solutions.
Throughout the project, students embraced the challenge of thinking creatively and critically. Their experiences varied, but the impact was universally positive. Hyesoo, a DP 2 student, reflected on how collaborating with a partner broadened and deepened their knowledge in an unfamiliar field. Rina, also in DP 2, shared how the data collection process drove her to troubleshoot issues on site and develop adaptive solutions. Joseph, another DP 2 student, noted that his experience in science courses enabled him to conduct research more efficiently and find precise answers. Kevin, a DP 1 student, expressed gratitude for his partner, stating that the collaboration helped him become more acquainted with the rigor of experimental design required in the DP, relevant scientific terminology, and the proper way to make graphs and tables. Overall, the project facilitated significant personal and academic growth for all involved. The Collaborative Sciences Project stands as a beacon of how we, as a community, cultivate global citizens in our school!
