Healthy Cooking with Toddlers
In the Bamboo cottage the children have been preparing their own snacks every day. This has been a great project that the children enjoy as part of their daily routine. As one of our students Austin exclaimed on Tuesday, “I can’t believe how wonderful the food is in this school. It’s amazing!” There’s no doubt that cooking with kids takes more time and organization than cooking alone, but when we consider the benefits to their development and learning, it makes the extra effort feel all the more worthwhile.

Our children have baked banana and carrot cakes, oatmeal cookies, bread, egg bakes with vegetables, fruit pizza, made different salads, smoothies, sushi, sweet potato chips, and dipped vegetables in dressing. They have peeled boiled eggs, learned how to crack raw eggs (only getting a little bit of shell in!), spread butter and jam on toast, and have learned how to peel bananas and tangerines. We as teachers have enjoyed these experiences of preparing food with the children, and sharing the food we prepare together has allowed us to get to know each other in a deeper way.
